Poker Terminology
- All-in:
- When a player bets all the chips that they have; they put it [their chips] all-in.
- Ante:
- In games that have ante, players at the table are required to place in a small, forced bet, before their hands are dealt.
- Bet:
- Amount of chips that a player puts into the pot in order to both raise the pot and continue in the game with their given hand.
- Blind:
- The blind is a bet required by two or more persons during the first round; prior to the cards being dealt. There is a small blind and a big blind. The small blind is posted by the player(s) next to the person on the immediate left of the button holder. The large, or big blind is played by the person no the immediate left of the button holder.
After the blinds are posted and the cards are dealt, those who posted the small blind are required to 'Call' the rest of the blind if they wish to continue onto the next round.
- Button:
- In some poker games, there is a person whom holds the button. The players to the button holder's left are usually required to post the set blinds.
- Call:
- During the betting period of each round, if a bet is played or if there is a remaining blind that is being forced, a user can call the remaining amount to remain in the game.
- Dealer:
- The dealer is the person whom deals out the cards.
- Flop:
- The flop is the first three community cards that are dealt. In games such as Texas Hold'em and Omaha Poker, the dealer first deals each player their Hole Cards (also referred to as the Starting Hand) and one round of betting is played. Once the betting has stopped, the dealer then deals out three community cards. These first three cards are called the Flop.
- Fold:
- When a user removes themselves from the current game round and gives up their hand.
- Hand:
- The cards which a player is dealt makes up their hand. With certain types of poker, such as Texas Hold'em Poker, the hand is made up of two cards the players are dealt, along with selected cards from the flop or the river.
- Player:
- Refers to the persons playing the poker game. Persons that are not dealing cards.
- Post:
- To post. Namely, posting a blind. Posting a blind refers to a player putting in the appropriate amount of chips to continue in the game.
- Raise:
- When a player puts in more chips than the current bet, they are raising the said bet.
- River:
- In Poker games that contain community cards, such as Texas Hold'em and Omaha poker, the five community cards are referred to as the river.
